It will take place at the Gran Via site of Fira de Barcelona, one of the largest trade fair complexes in Europe, located in Hospitalet de Llobregat, in a new business development area. Gran Via is also one of the most modern venues designed by the Japanese architect Toyo Ito, winner of the Pritzker prize.
The congress was first held in 1950 and since 1988 it has taken place at a different European Capital every year. This will be the fifth time Barcelona hosts this event, after having done it in 1992, 1999, 2009 and 2014. Other cities that hosted the congress in the past are Rome, London, Amsterdam, Paris and Munich, to name just a few. The European Society of Cardiology Congress gathers specialists from 140 different countries every year, which makes it one of the most important scientific events in the world. On the 2016 edition, for example, more than 30,000 experts attended the congress and nearly 11,000 scientific studies were presented. The 2017 European Society of Cardiology Congress will address 150 cardiovascular topics and it will focus on Percutaneous Coronary Interventions (better known as PCI). 30.000 attendees are expected to take part in this event, and there will also be 500 scientific sessions by experts to discuss about the most important areas of the field: scientific research, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease.
The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) represents more than 90.000 workers of this field and it is an independent and non-profit medical society formed by healthcare professionals who volunteer their time and work experience. The main goal of the ESC is to reduce the impact and burden of cardiovascular disease, which is the biggest killer in Europe. This organisation distributes scientific knowledge to cardiovascular professionals all over Europe, so they can treat their patients the best way possible. It is obviously a huge event and it will also be peak season in the city of Barcelona, so we recommend everyone attending the congress to book accommodation in advance. Hotel Miramar is only 15 minutes away by car from Gran Via. At this hotel you will be able to enjoy a five-star stay in Barcelona, where you can do some tourism, while being close to the venue of the congress.
