Tips for Marató de Barcelona 2019

Every year, the most experienced runners have the Catalan capital in their crosshairs thanks to the spectacular Zurich Marató de Barcelona 2019. Sunday 10 March is the chosen date for participants to lace up their best running shoes and face the 42-km race. Once again, more than 20,000 athletes are expected to take to the city streets in one of the most interesting urban races in Europe, passing through Barcelona’s most highly prized tourist areas.

The Sunday of the race, at 8:30 am, runners meet on Avinguda Reina Maria Cristina (ten minutes from our hotel for the Barcelona marathon), at the start line for the Barcelona 2019 marathon.

To help you successfully complete the race, we have some tips to make Zurich Marató de Barcelona 2019 a positive experience:

  • Get to the start line with extra time to warm up a bit before you start and shake out the nerves
  • Join the pacemaker group that best fits your pace –there are 6 different ones– at least 15 minutes before the race starts
  • Find out who is the pacer for your group, as they will set a steady pace throughout the race. Don’t get obsessed with keeping up, remember that you have your own goals
  • Remember that you must finish within 6 hours and that after the fifth kilometre you’ll find refreshment stations with toilets every 2.5 km
  • Try to make yourself as comfortable as possible and have everything you need ready the day before
  • The first 7 kilometres are uphill, so be patient and start off slowly
  • Dismiss any negative thoughts and listen to your body: your wellbeing is what matters most
  • Enjoy the victory as you cross the finish line!

Running routes around Barcelona

At the reception of our luxury hotel in Barcelona we’ll be more than happy to recommend several running routes near the hotel so you can go out and train on Saturday before the big race

One of our favourite running routes in Barcelona goes all round Montjuïc. Although the hills may seem daunting at first, all the emblematic buildings you’ll pass along the way make it well worth the effort. Plus, you’ll be able to run the final kilometres of the Olympic marathon route from the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.

You can start running in Barcelona on Montjuïc from Plaça Espanya. After you pass the two Venetian towers, with the impressive Magic Fountain of Montjuïc on the horizon, turn right and you’ll see the CaixaForum Barcelona cultural centre and the Pabellón de Barcelona designed by German architect Mies van der Rohe. Keep up the pace as you head uphill and you’ll see the architectural delights of Poble Espanyol on your left. It would be great to pop in for a visit but unfortunately the area isn’t a good place to run.

After you pass by, keep left and continue up Avinguda dels Montanyans. You’ll reach another of the most symbolic buildings in this area: Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya. There is a café at the top, which is a great place to take in the views as you recover with a bit of water or an energy bar.

Set off again with the Joan Maragall gardens on your left and you’ll reach Avinguda de l'Estadi. This is a favourite among athletes, as you’ll pass Palau Sant JordiEstadi Olímpic Lluís Companys and the Museu Olímpic de l'Esport Joan Antoni Samaranch; all of which convey the Olympic spirit and desire to be one’s best self.

After this section, you’ll reach La Font del Gat and the Fundació Joan Miró. Finally, you’ll come to Avinguda Miramar and make the last push up the hill to Hotel Miramar Barcelona, where we’ll be waiting for you with all sorts of comforts to help you rest and relax before the race.
